Port Douglas Images
Port Douglas - Tropical North Queensland
Port Douglas is known as a holiday destination the world over.
Mainly because of Christopher Skase who built the luxurious
sprawling golf resort Sheraton Mirage and the Marina Mirage boat
harbour in the heady eighties. He knew how to attract a crowd and he
planted the roadsides leading into Port Douglas with fabulous palms
to give you that immediate sense of arrival and anticipation.
This in turn attracted other property investors to start building
luxury resorts and holiday accommodation and the infrastructure to
provide goods and services to the incoming guests.
The rumour spread very quickly amongst wealthy travellers from the
world over and they started to trickle in one by one and then it
took off. Presidents, Prime Ministers, Princesses and Princes, movie
stars, movie producers and rock stars all started to flock to Port
Douglas to taste the region for themselves and today Port Douglas is
known the world over as a must do holiday destination.
Port Douglas is a village where you can stay for some rest and
relaxation or you can choose to boogey the night away in a nightclub
until the wee hours of the morning. It’s a big sprawling township
with resorts lining the beaches, the hillsides and the rivers and
everywhere in between.
There is a shuttle bus that circulates day and night around all of
the resorts moving people back and forth from the centre of Port
Douglas. On Sundays you can ride the historic Balley Hooley steam
train from your resort to the famous Port Douglas markets.
Port Douglas is very picturesque and attracts a lot of carnivals and
events throughout the year that celebrate our tropical lifestyle and
in turn attracts guests from down south in winter to come up north
and have some fun in the sun.
Guests just love taking a stroll or a bike ride along the famous
Four Mile Beach on sunrise and sunset admiring the beauty of the
mountains behind that frame the scene. Everyone you pass has a nice
warm smile or greeting for you as they realise they are holiday in a
very special place indeed.
From the boat marina you can take a luxury private charter boat out
to a tropical island for a day of snorkelling and family enjoyment
or you can join others and go out to the Quicksilver pontoon for the
day and enjoy exploring the reef from the semi-submersible submarine
or underwater observatory.
Snorkelling, Scuba diving and scenic helicopter flights over the
magnificent Great Barrier Reef will be the order of the day for
everyone to enjoy. There are many types and styles of boats to
choose from to take you on an adventure and each one going to a
different destination so you can visit the reef on a number of
occasions and not have a repeat of what you have seen before.
People from all of the Cairns holiday destinations flock to the Port
Douglas Cotters markets every Sunday for a look at the local
artist’s handiworks and to immerse themselves in the heady hustle
and bustle and ambience of the region. At the Port Douglas markets
you can pick yourself up some great hand-made silver and leather
jewellery, great children’s clothing, art works and children’s toys,
handmade postcards, coconut heads and fresh farm produce from the
surrounding region.
Port Douglas has accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets from
the ultra-luxurious holiday homes that are perched on the cliff
faces overlooking the Great Barrier Reef to fancy 3 star
accommodation in the main street for easy access to all of the
action day and night, to family resorts that offer everything kids
could wish for and more. There is backpacker accommodation and
caravan parks near the beach, Port Douglas is a tropical village
that visitors just love to visit and explore.
